Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cap placed over your tooth to restore functioning and appearance. They make the tooth stronger and improve the shape and size. The crown covers the entire visible portion of the tooth and is cemented into place.

Why would I need a dental crown?

You may need a dental crown if you have weak, broken, or cracked teeth, to hold them together and avoid any additional fracturing. Crowns are also used to:

  • Attach a bridge
  • Support large fillings
  • Place over dental implants
  • Cover discolored or deformed teeth

What is the procedure for traditional dental crowns?

Traditional dental crowns can usually be fitted in just two office visits. As the first step, Dr. Samet prepares your tooth or implant for the crown. For one tooth, Dr. Samet will grind and shape it so the crown can fit snugly and comfortably on top.

Next, she creates an impression of your tooth and gum and sends it to a dental lab for your custom crown to be created. You’ll wear a temporary crown in the interim until it’s ready. Once it’s ready, you’ll return to the office where Dr. Samet will remove your temporary crown and permanently cement your new custom crown to your tooth. This is the more traditional process for dental crowns.

What are CEREC crowns?

Many patients now opt for this new innovative method because it can be completed in just one office visit. Dr. Samet can economically restore your damaged teeth with advanced, durable ceramic material.

CEREC technology involves the use of CAD, or computer-aided technology, to create a crown restoration in a couple of hours. You don’t have to wait weeks for impressions to be created in a lab since the technology is all there in the office.

The technology incorporates a camera, a computer, and a specially designed milling machine. The process is more comfortable and efficient than traditional dental crowns.

CEREC has 17 different color shades for Dr. Samet to choose from to give you the best match to your natural teeth and visually-appealing results. If you’re interested in cosmetic dentistry and CEREC crowns, call or book online to find out more.
